Effects of Coffee Enemas
As with other enemas, coffee enemas cause peristalsis and encourage the evacuation of the intestine. Increased bile flow also causes the small intestine to become more alkaline. Many Health professionals and natural health practitioners agree a more alkaline system is necessary for good health. So this will improve digestion.

Another aspect of coffee that is noteworthy is that it has the effect of working like an astringent in the large intestine, assisting cleaning out the walls of the colon.
As stated in our post on Toxic food, one of the main causes of poor health is the production and absorption of toxins within the small and large intestines-usually from poor diet or poor digestion. If food is not digested properly, the sugars end up fermenting and the protein starts to putrefy. This ends up producing toxic chemicals which are then absorbed into your liver.
The coffee enema improves one’s digestion by causing the bile flow to increase and taking out toxins in the large intestine so they will not be absorbed. Probably the majority of people with health complaints suffer from impaired digestion and the fact that toxins of some kind are being produced in the intestines.
So why not just drink coffee by the gallon?
Well, because for a lot of people it just makes you more “hyper” or jittery. My friends told me to avoid drinking it with my particular health condition-but you are different and need to seek your own health advice on that point. I was told to stay off coffee with the external hemorrhoid problem I had, and it does not agree with those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome and acid reflux, or of a nervous disposition. Dr Jerry Walters, a Gerson therapy exponent, tested the effects of coffee taken both rectally and by mouth. He found that, by mouth coffee contains aromatic acids that irritate and often upset the stomach;rectally, these same aromatics “do no harm”. By mouth, he found that coffee tends to raise blood pressure and cramp capillaries in your extremities (e.g the toes)-the same doesn’t apply to coffee taken rectally. Yes, true, coffee taken orally does seem to help with reducing the risk of some diseases like liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, and it has useful antioxidants-but it is addictive! Most people who are used to getting a “caffeine Buzz” report the opposite with a coffee enema-a calming effect. I confirm that too.
The products I used are only available through network marketing unfortunately, and are expensive to order if you live in Australasia , Europe or the States, and ,at this point, unavailable online. So I have researched some alternatives for you (SEE LINK BELOW).

The above site offers good products, including the enema buckets and related equipment. Study the information they have available and it will help you decide if a coffee enema will help you in your detox needs. They have a useful forum which you can participate in.
If you already know about enemas, maybe have your own enema bucket, you may just want to check out other enema products discreetly. This site may then be useful, but don’t expect much more useful information from it: ShopInPrivateEnemas.
The Optimal Health program-or any other you opt for- may recommend different supplements but it is important to take the right supplements during the period of the detox, and, as frequently stated in our site disclaimer, consult with your doctor first.
What are the benefits of using a coffee enema?
Kristina Amelong, founder of the Optimal Health Network, says in a YouTube video which you can view above: “By doing coffee enemas along with a rebuilding and cleansing program, I have seen my clients regain their health from fibromyalgia, chronic back pain, prostatitis, intestinal disorders, chemical sensitivities, withdrawal from cigarettes, diabetes and many other health imbalances”.
So one can gather from the above that there are health benefits but that you cannot take the coffee enema in isolation. You need to accompany it with a “rebuilding and cleansing program“. When I did my own detox I was taking a Health Drink, a Cleansing Drink - consisting of 1 glass of distilled water, 1 teaspoon of raw honey and a teaspoon of the appropriate herbal laxative powder to cleanse out the colon, and a Tissue-building drink + other supplements. I will endeavor to cover this more fully in future posts, but consult the Optimal Health network for what supplements and detox programme they advise if you decide to do the detox with coffee enemas.
Also, Dr Ralph Moss PH.D says in his widely read, and oft-reprinted newsletter : “In general, coffee enemas are an important tool for physicians who try to detoxify the body. This is not to say they are a panacea. They certainly require much more research. But coffee enemas are serious business: their potential should be explored by good research—not mined for cheap shots at alternative medicine or derisively dismissed as yet another crackpot fad.”
I have found it helped with general well-being, and keeping a persistent hemorrhoid problem at bay. But note: if you have severe hemorrhoids you should avoid a coffee enema or get a properly adapted tube for the enema bucket.
Who should not use coffee enemas?
The list of those who should not undertake a detox program involving coffee enemas, such as those with heart disease is listed in the previous post Coffee Enemas (1).
What sort of coffee should you use for the enemas?
Do not use de-caff. Use only organic coffee which you can get from clicking on the link below or from ShopInPrivateEnemas or your natural health store.

Natural Detoxification using Coffee Enemas
Through suffering from hemorrhoids and experiencing a lot of discomfort through that, I was looking for Natural Detox tips to help detoxify my body so that I did not need to keep having to look for creams, ointments or pills to alleviate a problem that (I was discovering) had internal origins, and probably caused, or aggravated, to a large extent by stress and wrong diet choices.

Toxic food and Natural colon cleansing
The hemorrhoid problem made me aware of the wider health issues, and realized I had some way still to go to health-wise. By the grace of God, I came in touch with a couple in my church who told me about a great Natural Detoxification program which they had discovered back home in Singapore. The detox programme involved using COFFEE ENEMAS , and they said one additionally needed to go on a special diet whilst detoxing one’s body from TOXINS that had previously built up in the body.
The concept of a coffee enema seemed strange to me, but I knew my friends were reliable people , and their credibility was enhanced by them both having used the products, some of which they shared with me for free to get started. Both of them were in their early 50′s, but looked like early 40-year-olds, and had energy to spare!
Who pioneered the coffee enema detox?
In my research on coffee enemas, I found out that scientists in Germany in the 1920′s had discovered that a caffeine
solution could open the bile ducts and stimulate bile production in the liver in animals that were being used in lab experiments. Dr. Max Gerson used this in a clinical situation as part of a general detoxification procedure, initially for T.B, and later for cancer. Coffee enemas apparently feature in all the most important nursing textbooks throughout the 1950s; and they were listed in the Merck Medical Manual until about 1976.
Dr Gerson was a pioneer for nutritional therapy for cancer and other disease and seems to have had impressive results. You can read more in his book: A Cancer Therapy: Results of Fifty Cases and the Cure of Advanced Cancer. His theory was that caffeine will travel up the hemorroidal to the portal vein and thereon to the liver itself. He discovered-and documented-some pretty eye-opening effects to this procedure.
He noticed, for example, that patients who began using these enemas no longer needed pain-killers. It also produced a “calming effect”. Coffee enemas can relieve constipation but Gerson did say that their primary purpose “was not given for the function of the intestines but for the stimulation of the liver.“ The dilation of the bile duct has the effect of draining toxins from the liver and increasing the production of an enzyme called G.S.T which helps to remove toxins and free radicals from the blood.
Although there has been derision and criticism of coffee enemas in some quarters, there has been some scientific backing to the above and to Gerson’s theory. Apart form the Gerson Institute research, apparently Dr Wattenberg and some colleagues in 1981 were able to show that some substances found in coffee do indeed cause an increase in the production of G.S.T. Then there are the ordinary human testimonies. Thousands have reported relief or even healing from serious diseases through using programs that include the coffee enema detox, such as Dr Lynn Tan‘s ( she is a Naturopath and Health Seminar speaker) Detoxification and Rejuvenation programme;also, Optimal Health Network by Kristina Amelong, a trained colon hydrotherapist and nutritional counsellor. When choosing a program it is important to choose one with a reasonable track record, that also offers or recommends nutritional supplements as these are needed when doing the enemas.

The above site will provide you with some good products, particularly regarding the enema buckets and related equipment. I am not able to endorse all their products, which seem to the unacquainted to be slightly “New Age”- such as “color therapy glasses”-but that is because the products I used were from a different company that does not at present sell online, and you are free to pick and choose which products you like anyway. Read the information on their site carefully and you then can make your own informed decisions. They have a forum which you will find useful and they give testimonials from people who have said they experienced great relief through their coffee enema detox and Natural Detoxification and colon cleansing programs.
Another good program is Ian Solley’s This Cure Works. Ian recommends (and so do we) that, before doing the enemas, you first take two weeks of butyrate and peppogest to help liquify the bile sludge in the gall bladder that can occur in some people. For further instructions on this , get his e-book This Cure Works.
Who should not use coffee enemas?
People with certain conditions e.g heart disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, diverticular disease, severe hemorrhoids, disease of the blood vessels, congestive heart failure, heart disease, severe anemia, abdominal hernia, gastro-intestinal cancer, recent colon surgery, and intestinal tumours should avoid coffee enemas. Also pregnant women are not advised to use them.

Natural colon cleansing:cleansing the colon from toxic food
One of the areas I was directed to when I was attempting to rid myself of the external hemorrhoid problem , was the whole area of diet-especially toxic food. For many years I was blessed in that I was able to eat just about anything, and because I am naturally slim and try to do moderate exercise, and don’t smoke, I did not put on much weight. But even slim people can be unhealthy and I was unhealthy because of a toxic colon which was caused by toxic food. There are toxic chemicals in in our air, food and water. We need pure food and air and water to do our best.
If your body is free of toxins, mucus, poisons and dead cells it will obviously be stronger, healthier and have more energy. I was eating things like deep fried chips, Kentucky Fried chicken and drank fizzy drinks on the road (as I was a sales person). When I did make food for the trip I would often like to make fried rice with anchovies! It doesn’t take a lot of medical knowledge to tell you that I had a problem with toxic food and that it would affect my health if I didn’t make changes e.g with a colon cleansing diet. Fortunately I met the right people and asked the right questions.
After using Chinese herbal remedies, I experienced some relief and then a greater victory was won once I started on a liver cleansing diet-as explained in External hemorrhoid causes and cure-and embarked on a Detoxification program. The Natural detoxification program revitalized my digestive organs, liver, gallbladder and kidneys. I will go in more detail into the use of enemas- which was a significant part of that-in a subsequent post.
What are the Signs and Symptoms of a toxic colon?
These can be headaches, allergies, skin problems, digestive problems, blocked sinuses, insomnia, depression, anxiety, fatigue, nervousness, aches and pain, having a lot of colds, nausea, constipation and, er, yes:hemorrhoids- to name just a few.
“Every tissue in the body is fed by the bloodstream which is supplied by the bowel. When the bowel is dirty, the blood is dirty and so are the organs and tissues. It is the bowel that must be cared for first before any effective healing can take place.”- Dr Bernard Jensen, pioneering naturopathic physician and master herbalist.
Let’s begin with the colon which is one of the most important eliminative organs we have, since most (over 80%) of all diseases begin here. What good is eating all the best foods, taking herbs and vitamins if the nutrients are not getting through a clogged-up, constipated colon? The most ideal transit time of food entering the mouth to the toilet is 18 to 24 hours. The average transit time is 3 days! Good bowel function is moving those bowels 2-3 times a day. If we have 3 meals a day and only move the bowels once, one has to ask:where are the other meals? When we don’t “go regularly” the faecal matter sticks to your colon walls.
This can cause you to poison yourself-technical term “auto-intoxification”- because the toxins are absorbed into the bloodstream. This fecal matter eventually hardens and this becomes a breeding round for parasites and unhealthy bacteria. Why do obese people eat so much? One reason: the nutrients can’t get through the blocked walls of the colon, so their bodies continue to say “Feed me! feed me!”. After a colon cleanse (colonic or using an enema), many obese people lose weight and their appetite reverts to a more normal one, since now the nutrients are finally getting where they need to go!
What is healthy colon cleansing food and what do I take in a colon cleansing diet?
The following are some healthy options to detoxify your body. I need to point out that the natural detox program I used involved the use of a coffee enema-which will be discussed in other posts-and it required taking supplements and many of the foods mentioned below. The purpose was to cleanse the blood and liver, and a herbal laxative was used for removing encrustations in the colon. Do not rush into any colon cleansing detox (particularly) ,or colon cleansing diet, ,as it could be a shock to your system, and certainly consult with your Health Professional before doing so (see our site disclaimer). Jenelle Jordan’s Basic Body Detox is a good program (see below) and in it you will learn the difference between a Basic body detox and colon cleansing.
* Fruit-by eating only fruit prior to midday, we can assist the body during its “natural cleansing cycle” as some natural health writers have described it. Eating any other food during the natural cleansing cycle can inhibit cleansing while the body is forced to re-expend its energies on digesting
*fruit digests faster than other foods so eat fruit first so that it will not putrefy while other foods are being digested.
Juice
One of the things I was advised to get to compensate for all the years of toxic food I had eaten, was a Juicer. This is because my Singaporean friend recommended it, but also because juice was part of the detoxification program I was following anyway. A good quality juicer is an investment. It separates juice and pulp, and removing the fiber makes it easier for absorption of the vitamins and minerals by the body.
Other drinks-should be taken with warm ,not boiled, distilled water
*Spirulina mixed with honey and diluted in distilled water as a drink to replace mineral deficit etc 3-6x a day is good.
*Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with one teaspoon of honey taken before breakfast is like a natural water enema and will start things moving along nicely.
Vegetables
Vegetables (preferably raw) in salad form for lunch are a good thing during your colon cleanse. For dinner, eat lightly steamed or cooked veggies e.g potatoes, carrots and celery. This will give your digestive system relief from the usually excessive-meat-based western diet.
Meat
I was advised to stay away from meat during my detoxification program, but if you are just on a colon cleansing diet, fish, turkey and chicken with vegetables can be acceptable depending on your particular situation (obviously check with your doctor or Alternative Health practitioner and check the specifics of your Natural Detox Program)
Porridge oats (preferably) for breakfast. You can add honey and fruit but not white sugar, artificial sweeteners, and no milk.
Avoid milk, coffee, tea and all alcohol and fizzy sodas during your detoxification program. Don’t smoke (duh!). No salted foods or fried foods.
Over time as we develop this site we will try to include a more definitive list of colon cleansing food for help with natural colon cleansing and other detoxification methods.
